The Grace of Elastic
Elastic.
It bends. It stretches. What a wonderful invention!
But, way back when I was a teenager, I
wouldn’t be got DEAD in pants with elastic. Pants were to be form-fitting.
No elastic! Yuck!
Many years later (not to mention
three children later), my viewpoint has changed. Elastic is a gift from
God. It gives where your body has given up.
The thing is when we are younger,
everything had to be perfect especially when it came to our looks. As we
grow older, we see the wisdom and the grace in allowing some “give” in our
lives. Things don’t need to be so uniform or so perfect.
Elastic, though, only allows so much
give before even it protests! Elastic has its boundaries too!
Elastic is important to me because
my body doesn’t always permit those clothes with no give. How many of us
have unbuttoned our top pants button after a big meal? Elastic extends the
grace we need to move around after those big meals.
As you look at your life, what are
the places where you aren’t willing to budge? Where are the hurts that run
so deep that you can’t let go? Where is the anger so great that you can’t
walk away from it?
God extends to each of us the grace
we need to move around in our lives. God is the elastic we need! Yes, God
has boundaries, but God also gives us some of the elasticity we need to
move within our pain and our anger. God’s grace gives us comfort within
boundaries that protects us and the people around us.
As we begin to enter the Fall
season, remember the world is full of things that won’t move or change.
There’s nothing we can do about that except…We can change how we act or
react to those things. Extend the same grace (elastic!) that God extends
to you in those areas in your life where it’s needed.
Grace, peace and lots of elastic!
